Before You Transfer: Verify Crypto Networks, Addresses, and Fees

Learn how to prepare deposits and withdrawals, match networks, verify addresses, and check fees before moving crypto.

Depositing or withdrawing crypto is a transfer between addresses on a blockchain network. A transfer can be difficult or impossible to reverse if you choose the wrong network or send funds to the wrong address. A careful check before confirming helps reduce avoidable mistakes.

Deposits: match the asset and network

Before sending funds to an exchange, open its deposit page and select the exact asset you plan to transfer. Check which networks are supported for that asset. The sender and receiving platform must support the same network for the transfer to arrive correctly. For example, choosing an asset with a familiar ticker is not enough: that asset may be available on several networks, and the deposit address or requirements can differ.

Copy the deposit address from the receiving platform and compare its first and last characters after pasting it into the withdrawal form. Use the platform’s copy function when available, and avoid relying on an address from an old transaction or saved note. Some assets also require a memo, tag, or payment ID in addition to the address. If the deposit page provides one, enter it exactly as shown.

Withdrawals: verify before confirming

For a withdrawal, select the destination asset and network based on the receiving wallet or platform’s instructions. Confirm that the destination accepts deposits on that network, then check the full address and any required memo or tag. Do not assume a network is compatible just because it appears in both services: verify the specific asset and network combination.

Review the withdrawal fee, the amount that will arrive, and any minimum withdrawal or deposit. Fees and processing times can vary by network and service. A low fee should not outweigh the need to use a network the recipient supports. If available and appropriate, consider a small test transfer first, especially when using a new address or destination. A test transfer may still incur fees and does not guarantee future transfers will be successful.

Use a deliberate confirmation checklist

  • Confirm the asset and network on both the sending and receiving sides.
  • Check the destination address, including its beginning and ending characters.
  • Include any required memo, tag, or payment ID.
  • Review the fee, minimums, and expected arrival amount.
  • Check whether the receiving service requires extra steps or confirmations.
  • Confirm the details on the final review screen before authorizing the transfer.

If a transfer is delayed or missing

Check the transaction status and transaction ID in the sending service. If the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain but does not appear at the destination, contact the receiving platform’s official support and provide the transaction ID and relevant details. Never share your password, two-factor authentication code, or recovery phrase with anyone claiming they can recover funds. Support teams should not need those secrets.

Some transfers cannot be recovered when sent to an unsupported network or incorrect address. Treat every transfer as a separate operation: verify the details each time, even if you have sent funds to the same destination before.
